J Lo Feeds Her Babies
by Kate Kahn - 09th May 2008
When you work, it’s hard to keep up with the tabloids. I have to rely on the regular visit to the hair salon to catch up on what’s happening in Hollywood. I’m excited that maternity fashion has evolved, and like to see what the celebrities wear when they get pregnant. I did run across the People magazine with Jennifer Lopez and her adorable twins. I’m so happy that they are healthy and I enjoyed the peak into the nursery. As I looked at the photos, I noticed that each baby was being fed by, wait stop, was I imagining this, no, they were both being fed at the same time. Each parent was gazing with love at their newborn and feeding them with a bottle. Wow, that was a risky photo.
The first thing that came to mind, is the grief she’s going to get about her decision on how to feed her babies. I felt bad for her, there she was having to justify her decision to complete strangers. I just shook my head, because no mom should ever have to defend her decision about how to feed her children. This particular mom happens to live in the limelight and is followed by photographers and paparazzi, but still, it’s her life, her children and her decision. It made me realize a few things about our culture, and we don’t have time or space for that here, yet I was struck by one thing: we do look to others to validate our own decisions, and sometimes we look to people we’ve never met, but just read about or seen in a magazine. We also might feel justified in criticizing others for their lifestyle or their decisions when we know nothing about their circumstances. I say, live and let live, and find your own path, but don’t criticize others if they disagree.
