A Little one-on-one goes a Long Way!

by Barbara Dehn - 17th January 2008

There's a new pilot program in Scotland that would be a great model for us to follow here in the U.S. The program trains volunteer mothers to help teach new mothers some tricks of the trade when it comes to breastfeeding. The new moms, who accept the support, will get one hour-long home visit a month from the volunteer moms. One new mom says, " it's a very valuable service. If it wasn't for the service I think I'd have given up breastfeeding a long time ago and just the reassurance you need as a new mum. They've been a great encouragement."

Wow, this is great! It is so important to provide the one on one support and encouragement to help new moms get started and be able to feed their babies. I applaud this Scottish program and the volunteers who make it possible. Not everyone has access to this kind of one on one help. Boy, wouldn't it be great if this was the norm and not the exception?

How do we best support new moms? Great question. There are New Mom's Groups that meet in person, there is on-line support through various websites, friends, family, and of course professionals. For little ones and new parents, there seems to never be enough support to go around. It does take a village, and it takes a sense of humor to navigate the journey.
