Momnesia
For years I've been forgetting things. I've forgotten appointments, social committments, and I'm sure other things too, if I could just remember what they were. Many times I've thought to myself "Kate, you are really losing it." But as it turns out, maybe it's not my fault. There might actually be a scientific reason for it. Maybe my kids are to blame! Seriously.
I've come to learn that there's a condition called Momnesia. It's amnesia for mothers. Sounds nuts, right? It actually has some science to back it up. Experts say that having kids changes the way the chemicals in your brain react. Add to that the stresses that come with motherhood, coupled with working full time and it's a wonder I haven't forgotten more.
There's a story about it that aired on the TODAY show on NBC.
I don't know about you mothers out there, but it seems I'm always to blame for something in my house. But, next time my son says "mom, you forgot to pack me lunch," or "mom, you forgot to put my homework in my backpack," I think maybe I'll turn to him in an exorcist-like way and say "It's all your fault that I forget things!" I'm already feeling better!
On another note, a little breastfeeding humor. Check out a video by Amy Wilson who does a one-woman show off-Broadway called "The Mother Load." The show looks at parenting as a competitive sport! For World Breastfeeding Week she did a little standup comedy routine at a luncheon Medela (big pump manufacturer). Here's a video of it on You Tube. Enjoy!
