A Baby to Hold at Christmas

by Barbara Dehn - 30th December 2007

“Is he coming with them?” my son asked anxiously. “Will Brandon be here for Christmas?” Everyone in the house was excited, because there would be a baby in the house for Christmas. Every baby is wonderful, special, adorable, and seeing how people melt in their presence is interesting to watch.

First, watching the baby’s mom and dad lug bag after bag of things that the baby might need for those few hours away from home. Then seeing the love in their eyes as they present their bundle of joy to the eager crowd of outstretched arms and beaming faces. “Isn’t he cute.” “He looks just like you.” “He’s so sweet natured!” All of these, and more exclamations about this tiny person, with a lifetime of potential.

Little Brandon was calm and contented the entire day. He cried when he was hungry, napped through a noisy Christmas dinner while perched in his car seat in a place of honor. He was passed around and, bounced, burped and exclaimed over. The parents with older children smiled knowingly as the new parents spoke of how he was “already doing this and already doing that.” He’s a wonder and a joy to them and they delight in everything he does. I was honored to be present at his birth, and seeing him in his little, red velvet jammies now is wonderful.

We were all happier and more enriched because Brandon came for Christmas.
