Twins

by Barbara Dehn - 26th November 2007

I saw a mom with twin babies the other day. She told me about her experience trying to care for her two little ones. Having twins is an enormous challenge and one that I hope moms will write about in the forum. Taking care of one baby is hard enough, how about adding another one into the mix. If you thought you were sleep deprived with one, just multiply that by two, which is unimaginable for some of us.

One of the best pieces of advice that I heard from one of my patients who had twins and lived to share her wisdom, was to ask for, and accept, all the help offered. I learned so much from Renee that I’ve been able to pass on to patients. Renee wanted to breastfeed her babies exclusively for the first six months. She described many times, when they were both hungry, and she couldn’t pick them both up, because of a back injury, so she put them on large pillows on the floor, and got on her hands and knees to get both latched at the same time. Unconventional? Yes. Did it work for her? Yes.

When I’ve heard her describe that scenario to other moms with twins, I’ve seen the complete range of reactions, from a smile and agreement that they would have done the same things, to a shake of the head and a “that’s not for me.”

I come back to the same issue again and again. What works for one mom, may work for another, and may not. The stories and experiences may be different, and the goal is the same, a happy and healthy baby.
