My Purse and my Pump!

by Kate Kahn - 21st May 2007

When my daughter was born I was committed to breastfeeding her. But going back to work wasn't easy...because work didn't make it easy. I had a tiny office ( about 3 feet by 5 feet!). There was barely room for my desk let alone my purse and my pump! While I shut the door when I pumped, I was in constant fear of people hearing the noise of the pump, or someone needing my attention. Now, with more and more states hopping on the breastfeeding-friendly bandwagon many women won't have to go through what I went through. And some companies are taking the lead without even being prompted by state laws. The news that more companies are making life more lactation friendly comes as welcome news.

A recent article, Employers accommodate breastfeeding, cites statistics from the Society for Human Resource Management showing that the number of employers with lactation programs has grown from 16 percent in 1999 to 23 percent in 2006. The article states that some companies are offering private rooms for women who need to pump at work, offering discounts on pumps, and offering free phone and in-person consults with lactation specialists. Good for them!
