Sharing breast milk with those who need it most
Do you have any extra breast milk? If you do and are tempted to share it with a friend, please take a moment and donate it to a milk bank. In Neonatal Intensive Care Units, NICUs, across the country, there are premature babies and their families who are in desperate need for more donated breast milk.
Donating milk has never been easier. I can highly recommend a non-profit milk bank that's been providing breast milk to premies for over 30 years. The Mother's Milk Bank is a non-profit that collects milk and relies on the generosity of moms. Since 1974, over 4000 donors have provided over 1.5 million ounces of milk to help babies survive and thrive. Last year alone, the Mothers Milk Bank provided over 250,000 ounces of donor milk to babies throughout the Western US.
Milk banks carefully screen the mothers who are donating, test their blood for any hidden infectious disease and process the milk so that it's safe for the babies who receive it. There are lots of other certified Milk Banks available throughout the country that would be happy to have your extra milk and make sure it gets to the babies who would benefit most, the ones in NICUs who are the most fragile.
So if you have extra milk, please consider donating it to a Milk Bank, there are premature babies who are depending on it.
