BREAST OBSESSION

by Barbara Dehn - 07th June 2007

Is it me? Or have there been a lot of news stories lately about women being harassed about breastfeeding their babies in public?

What is going on? Everywhere I look, women’s breasts are used to sell cars or widgets or almost every consumer good. Breasts are everywhere. There’s cleavage all over the TV, in shows and advertisements. Ever watch CSI? There’s lots of evidence of endowed chests all over each episode. I don’t know how they collect evidence in those “hot” outfits. Breasts are everywhere.

Someone please explain this to me. Are the same people who are offended by mothers breastfeeding their babies in public also offended by the bombardment of images of breasts in the media? We’re so used to seeing images of breasts everywhere, so why would seeing a mother use her breasts to actually feed her baby be offensive? Breasts are everywhere, but apparently not for feeding infants.

Women are being given lots of mixed messages. You must breastfeed. But you must not breastfeed in public. Breasts are ok to look at on TV and in advertisements, but real breasts feeding a real child, oh, that’s too much for some folks. What gives? I’m just shaking my head at the hypocrisy. Thanks for letting me vent a little.
