Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Formula and weight gain

A new study about weight gain and formula provides some food for thought though more research is needed.  Many people are concerned about weight gain with formula ( though there is nothing definitive on it).  But now a new study published in the journal Pediatrics suggests there may be one type of formula in which babies' weight gain mirrors breastfeeding.  It's hypoallergenic formulas that appear to cause equitable weight gain in infants.

In the study, researchers randomly assigned 59 two-week-old infants to have either standard cow milk formula or a hypoallergenic protein hydrolysate formula.  The babies stayed on that diet for 7 months.  Babies in the two groups were similar in length and weight at birth.  The weight gain in babies fed the hypoallergenic formula was similar to breastfed babies.

But, it's important to note that the study was small and more studies are needed.  If you want more information, check with your pediatrician to make sure you know what all your options are.

Happy New Year!
