Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Support from husbands & families

Choosing how you're going to feed your baby is a big decision and one that's very personal.  It's not a black and white issue, though many would have us believe it is.  There is so much societal pressure to breastfeed.  But there are so many things to take into account before you make your decision. For isntance, do you have to return to work and if so, when?  If you are returning to work, is your workplace conducive to pumping?   What's your family dynamic like?  Will it be better for everyone if you use formula or will it be easy to breastfeed?  Importantly, I think sometimes one of the most critical questions gets forgotten: will you have the support you need no matter what your decision is?   It takes a village to raise a child.  Whether you're happily married or a single mom, you need support from family.

If you choose to breastfeed, will you have help in preparing the bottles and cleaning the pump?  Will you have someone who can help care for the baby while you pump or perhaps while you get some sleep?  Will you have someone around to remind you to eat and drink lots of water?  if you work, will you have childcare help?

Raising a child is not easy whether you breastfeed or use formula.  While it's probably the most rewarding thing you'll ever accomplish, do it in a stress-free environment is key to real success.  Making sure your village is in place before you decide how to feed your child, it a must.

Gosh, you make it sound so hard to breastfeed! So much to think about--I even have to find someone to remind me to eat and drink? It's a wonder any mom can do it! I guess if I formula feed, I won't have so much to worry about--thanks for all of this information! I'm going to tell my OB about this website at my next visit--she has been talking to me about breastfeeding but never mentioned that it might be easier for everyone if I just formula feed.

"If you choose to breastfeed,

"If you choose to breastfeed, will you have help in preparing the bottles and cleaning the pump? Will you have someone who can help care for the baby while you pump or perhaps while you get some sleep?" Wouldn't preparing the bottles or having someone watch the baby while you get some sleep also apply if you're formula feeding? On top of that, if you're actually breastfeeding (as opposed to bottle feeding pumped breastmilk), there aren't any bottles involved...
