Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Clever Mom, Clever Child!

There's a common myth that breastfed babies are smarter than babies fed formula.  But, it's just that---a myth.

A recent study found that breastfed babies are smarter because their mothers are smarter and not because of all the nutrients found in breastmilk.

The scientists found that once you took out factors such as the mother's intelligence, and her socio-economic status, it turned out that there was no difference between breastfed babies and formula-fed children.  They also found that aside form the mother's intelligence, the amount of mental stimulation the children got was also an influence in IQ.

Could thre still be a link between breastfed babies and IQ?  Maybe.  But It goes without saying that many things influence a mother's ability to breastfeed--  stable finances, a good support system, good pre and postnatal healthcare to name a few.  That same population is likely to have had more education.  You tell me.

If you add up all the benefits of breast feeding, it\'s probably true that these babies are smarter. One of the most important benefits of breast milk is the ability to fight viruses--meaning a healthy baby from the get go! Less down time means more time for learning. I don\'t understand why humans would ever casually consider feeding their infants milk from another animal! If needed, hire a wet-nurse to feed your baby. By the way, I\'m just a high school grad with no advanced degree to help me figure out whats best for my baby--it\'s called common sense.
