Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Storing Breast Milk

A new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that
breastmilk is safe in the fridge if used within 4 days of pumping.
This is good news not only for moms who have babies in the hospital
and are trying to pump enough milk to provide the calories and other
nutrients, but also for working moms and all moms who can't bear to
even think about discarding any unused pumped milk.  In a small study
reported in the Journal of Pediatrics, the lead author, Dr. Schanler
found very little difference in bacteria counts in milk that was 48
hours old and milk that was 96 hours old.

There was also a suggestion to use glass bottles or BPA-free plastic
to store the milk. And, while freezing is ok, there is some loss of
nutrients when milk has been frozen.  It's not serious enough to say
don't use frozen milk, but I'd recommend that if you do use frozen
milk, try to mix in fresh with the frozen to help increase nutrients.
