Breastfeeding and Type 2 Diabetes

If diabetes runs in your family, or if you have gestational diabetes while pregnant, breastfeeding could be just the prescription for you.  A new study shows that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes.

What researchers found is that women who breastfeed for a year had a 15% lower chance of getting Type 2 diabetes.  That percentage is cumulative by the number of years you breastfeed.  So, a woman who has a second child, and breastfeeds for a year (after breastfeeding her first for a year) has a 30% lower chance of getting Type 2 diabetes.

The study, conducted by HMO Kaiser Permanente, coorborates a previous Harvard Medical Study done in 2005.

Happy New Year everyone!
