Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Are all feeding choices really choices?

Sometimes I hear people talking about feeding choices when it comes to
formula and breastmilk.  I think it's important to remember that not
everyone has a choice. It may seem to someone looking from the outside
in, that moms can make any choice they want about how to feed their
babies, but this is often not the case. I've met countless moms who
wanted to have a choice, they wanted to breastfeed longer, but
circumstances that were out of their control determined whether they
had a choice. So many times moms tell me that their milk supply
decreased when they went back to work, or that their supply wasn't
sufficient for the baby.  Sometimes, there's a medical condition that
requires medication that's not recommended with breastfeeding.  I've
had patients who needed emergency surgery and one who was
hospitalized.  They couldn't feed their babies.  Others have family
emergencies and find that their supply diminishes.  So, is it a
choice?  Sometimes moms have the luxury of having a choice of how to
feed their babies and for how long, and other times, they don't have a
choice, they just have to roll with the cards they get.  Sometimes the
choice is to make the best of a situation that you didn't anticipate
and do the best you can for your baby.

Or sometimes the better choice is to talk to someone more knowledged and understanding about their needs/concerns. Most of these "issues" aren\'t really issues that warrant stopping nursing...this is when mom needs the most support and encouragement to persevere and that it will get better/easier. Sometimes mom just needs a break or some help, NOT to give up or just give formula. The "cards they are dealt" are usually ones dealt by those who wish them to stop nursing and buy formula. You could do a much bettter job at encouraging moms, this blog sounds like your way of dealing with your own guilt for not breastfeeding for whatever reason. Just because it didn\'t work for you doesn\'t mean other mom\' can\'t see the positive and move past these "issues" to continue nursing. We need more education, not people telling us to "just give it up".
