When Breast Might Not Be Best
Breast is best, breast is best. It's a mantra that has been drilled into the collective psyche of pregnant women everywhere. And yes, most likely, breastfeeding is best for your baby. BUT, there's a new study out, published in the January edition of the journal Pediatrics, that found it might not be best when it comes to preventing allergies.
Researches studied nearly 1000 children who were participating in a study of diabetes prevention. All of them had been followed since birth.
What the researchers found out is the later you introduce children to some foods actually increases their sensitivity to that food by the time they are 5 years old. The worst culprits: eggs, oats, and wheat.
The researchers conclude that for children at risk of developing allergies, introducing them to foods sooner rather than later might be best.
