Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Buying Breastmilk

I saw a television story the other day about people who sell breastmilk on the Internet and those who buy it.  I've blogged before about the dangers of doing exactly this but perhaps it bears mentioning again.  If you're looking to buy breastmilk, please do so from a milk bank.  There are several around the country ( for a list click here).

Every donor from a milk bank has been screened for disease, medications and citizenship.  And, the breastmilk goes through a pasteurization process.  It's all important.  Without that guarantee you're simply taking someone's word that they have  clean bill of health.  Remember, people selling their milk are making money from doing so.  If you have to pay for breastmilk, which many people do, is it worth risking your baby's health by taking some unknown person's word for it?  I don't think so.

To top it off, buying breastmlk from a milk bank is often cheaper than buying it online.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The statment that it is cheaper to buy breastmilk from a bank than online is false. You would typically pay at least $1 more per oz. from a bank. I also feel that if a bank wants women to donate their milk, they need to at least cover the cost of the supplies (i.e. storage bags, pump rentals, accessories, etc.)
