Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Increasing Breastfeeding Rates

How do we increase breastfeeding rates?  Well, one good way is to
train the nurses at the hospitals to help new moms get their babies
latched on.
It also helps to encourage moms to take a breastfeeding class before
they deliver. If moms get the support and education they need, they’re
much more likely to try breastfeeding and even continue offering
breastmilk to their babies as they grow and develop in the first 6
months to 1 year.  Not every woman can breastfeed exclusively for 6
months as is recommended for a variety of reasons.  #1, is giving moms
the support and education they need.  It’s not enough to just say you
should breastfeed, we must not make it more difficult for them, which
means classes, access to lactation consultants and other trained
health professionals, easy to follow guidelines and practical how to’s
in the hospital.  What we’ve learned is that it’s not just one thing
that increases breastfeeding or pumping rates, it has to be
comprehensive.

Do moms know best? We believe they do, but the government may not..

Your freedom to choose between breast and bottle-feeding could be in jeopardy.
