Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Easing the Transition Back to Work

Returning to work for a new mom can be emotionally traumatic; it's difficult to leave your baby and the task of figuring out how you're going to continue feeding your baby breastmilk by pumping at work can be stressful.

I read a good tip sheet on this topic and thought it had some great ideas.  Here are a few:

* Talk to your employer about your needs.  Explain that you'll need break times in order to pump.  Tell them exactly how much time you'll need and offer to make up the time.

* Think about buying a double breast pump.  That will save you time.

* Start pumping at home 3-4 weeks before you return to work.  Not only do you get used to pumping but it will help keep your milk supply up.

* Develop a pumping schedule for work.

* Obviously try to schedule pumping breaks during normal break times like lunch.

* Don't forget to tell your boss the benefits of breastfeeding including the fact that the less stressed you are, the more productive you're likely to be!

Hope this helps.
