Swine Flu (H1N1) & Breastfeeding
I was interviewed the other day on Breastfeeding and the H1N1 virus,
also known as swine flu. I also read Kate’s excellent post here and
the link from the CDC. Kate’s right, there’s so much more that moms
need to know as the flu season approaches.
1. If you’re breastfeeding, it’s ok to get the H1N1 flu vaccine
when it becomes available
2. If you’re pregnant, it’s recommended that you get the H1N1 flu
vaccine as soon as it becomes available. Because our immune systems
change in pregnancy, women who are pregnant are much more likely to
become seriously ill with H1N1.
3. Moms who are sick with the flu need to wash their hands
frequently, try to wear a mask while caring for their babies.
4. If moms are sick with the flu, try to find a healthy family
member or friend to feed the baby. It’s ok to use pumped breast milk
or formula.
5. If a sick mom is the only one available to feed the baby, please
wear a mask and wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of
infection.
6. Moms who are breastfeeding can safely take the anti-viral
medications that are used to treat the flu.
7. Breast milk is safe to feed the baby, whether mom or baby is
sick. Breast milk contains lots of healthy antibodies to help fight
off all sorts of infections.
We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
