Breastfeeding Backlash
I've read several articles lately about what people are calling "Breastfeedding Backlash," and think it's worth exploring a little. In Europe and here women are banding together to form a movement to stop others from making them feel guilty about not breastfeeding. They are tired of being made out to be "bad moms" for their choice not to breastfeed. They are fed up of all the claims ( some true, some not) that breastfeeding protects your child from this, that, and the other. And most of all, they are fed up of being judged. The movement seems to be gaining traction, if the number of recent articles is any indication.
So I have to ask you, is that the result that those promoting breastfeeding really want? A backlash against breastfeeding? Obviously not. But in their zeal to convert new moms and to indoctrinate them with the idea that it's breastfeeding or bad mom, the promotion is backfiring.
Breastfeeding is the ideal method of feeding your child. But it's not "right" for everyone. Making mothers feel bad about feeding their child formula is not the answer. It doesn't help anyone's cause, no matter what side you fall on. And speaking of sides, there shouldn't really be any. Shoudln't we be on the mother's side and that's it. Whatever method she chooses for her baby should be supported because it's the right decision of her and her family. It's no one else's business and certainly no one should have the right to judge her. This is not a court of law, after all. It is a court of public opinion. And everyone (lactivists included) would do well to remember that that court can be powerful on both sides of the issue!
