Teething
Between 6-7 months, many babies will start teething, which can lead to a change in the way they bottle or breastfeed. Many times, a happy baby will start to become more irritable and drool more than ever before. Their soft, pink gums may be swollen and tender as their budding baby teeth begin to erupt. You might notice them gnawing on their fists, chewing on a nipple or biting down on mom. Ouch!
Some babies will develop a low grade fever or a rash on their chins from the drool. Here are some tips:
• Try putting a teething ring in the freezer
• You might try some counter pressure with your finger
• For babies older than 8 months, try letting them gnaw on a frozen bagel
• Teething biscuits can help relieve some of the pain
• Check with your provider about using a little Tylenol to help them sleep at night
As more teeth come in over the next 2 -3 years, your child will get used to the sensation. Many do well until the larger molars in the back come in, when you might see more drooling again.
