Helping parents nurture healthy babies

What's the scoop on pacifiers?

You’re going to hear lots of different opinions on this, some babies do get confused and others don’t. Some babies will have nipple confusion and others don’t.

Every baby’s temperament is different.  Some are like vacuum cleaners, sucking on anything that gets near their mouths. Some experts believe that there are children who need an extra 2-4 hours of non-nutritive sucking each day.  That means that they suck just for fun, not for food.

Oral stimulation is an important part of their development.  And, come to think of it, for many adults too.  Just think of how many adults carry around a coffee cup, or water bottle, need to chew gum, or smoke?

Watch you baby  Do they suck anything they can like your finger, their fist or a toy. Are they eating plenty and gaining weight, yet still want to suck?

Are they having difficulty with breastfeeding?  Were they born prematurely.  If your baby seems to be confused, try letting them suck on your finger if they still need to suck.

A hungry baby will not be satisfied with a pacifier.  Every instinct in their body tells them to let you know that they’re hungry and they have to eat.  Babies don’t have the ability to delay their need for food.  When they want to eat they will cry and let you know.

Trust your instincts when it comes to your baby.
