It is what it is

by Barbara Dehn - 30th August 2007

“What are you going to do?” My friend smiled as she shrugged a little and held up her hands. “It is what it is.” We were talking about her little eight-month-old, Jack, who only likes to nurse in a dark and quiet room without any distractions.

Jack just happens to live in a household that includes a very lively and entertaining four- year-old brother. My friend was laughing because little Jack, the eight-month-old is weaning himself from the breast as he takes in more solids. He’d rather look around and engage in what the family’s doing than nurse. My friend is laid back and relaxed. “What are you going to do?"

She listed off all the things that she had done and she was content to nurse him for comfort and before naps and bedtime. We talked about a few other things she could try, if she wanted to. She was perfectly content and said how glad she was that she was able to nurse this baby, as things hadn’t been as smooth with her first. Was she beating herself up? Or feeling anxious, that she needed to make more efforts to nurse more often? Was she concerned that she was wasn’t doing the best for her baby? Of course not. She has 2 happy and healthy children. Moms all over the world work with what they have. They do the best they can in their circumstances and they nourish and nurture their babies. Sometimes things go exactly as recommended and sometimes they don’t. It is what it is.
