Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Insurance Companies

I just re-read the question on the site about insurance companies paying for medically necessary formulas for babies. This is one of those issues that just makes me crazy. I can’t tell you the number of letters that I’ve written or the hours I’ve spent on the phone arguing with the nameless operators from insurance companies about every conceivable issue.  From not covering life-saving medications to also not covering pre-existing medical conditions. Come on, I want to scream, everyone I know has some sort of pre-existing condition. It seems that if you’ve ever sneezed, or had a cold, you’ve had a pre-existing condition.  It just makes me crazy. And with medically fragile babies who need specialized formula, again it’s a case of insurance companies not covering the food that is necessary for these children to live.  What is going on here?  It makes sense, that if insurance companies only cover healthy people who don’t need anything, then they can pay out much larger quarterly bonuses to the executives who make these crazy decisions.

Each state has their own rules about these issues and the fight takes years, which means that many families just give up. It will take all of us making our voices heard to change these crazy policies. My nephew needed a specialized formula that’s only available by prescription. The whole family chipped in to help out with the expense.  In this economic climate, families who are already scrimping, saving and cutting back need all of the benefits that they are entitled to when they have medical insurance and the decision about what’s covered should be based on what’s medically necessary for the child, not what’s financially expedient for shareholders.
