Investing in the Time
The decision on how to feed your child is a mother's choice. Only she knows what will work best for her and her family. Yes, breast is best. There is no dispute. But, if we are to improve the percentage of mothers who breastfeed, let's do it in an intelligent way.
There's a program in place in two hospitals in Oneida County in New York that I think is worth considering. Maternity care nurses and physicians at those hospitals now have to complete breastfeeding education requirements. Specifically, the nurses undergo 18- hours of lactation management. Physicians get 3 hours. This training helps them give valuable advice to new moms both pre and post partum.
The program was the result of a survey that assessed physicians' needs when it comes to helping a new mom breastfeed.
We all know that breastfeeding can pose some frustrating challenges. It can be overwhelming and it's not for everyone. But increasing the rate of breastfeeding moms is possible if we put our money where our mouth is. Investing in the time to teach and provide support to those whose responsibility it is to advise, is not only critical but smart. And it seems to me, this initiative in Oneida County is doing just that.
(And by the way, I also think that teenagers should have to undergo more classroom and on road hours for Drivers Ed as well!).
