Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Finances and Formula

Recently I read about a mom who found herself in the hospital with her infant because he had been given too much water and not enough calories.

The mom didn’t understand that she couldn’t stretch her babies powdered formula by adding more water to the bottles.  Finances were stretched thin, and it seemed like a way to get more feedings out of a can of powder.  Unfortunately, this led to her son’s illness and stay in the pediatric intensive care unit.

When mixing formula it’s essential that the exact amount of water is added to the powder, otherwise the results could be serious, as that mom found out.

If you’re reading this or know someone who has a newborn and needs assistance with finding formula, please contact your local WIC office.  This is a great resource for families who need assistance with breastfeeding, formula and other food for babies and children.  WIC has toll free numbers, offices around the country,  and a website that can help you get the assistance you need.  They will even help you fill out the forms.

It’s a difficult time financially for most parents. And there is help available.  Be well.
