Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Thanksgiving with Gabrielle

This Thanksgiving we had a very special visitor who joined our Thanksgiving feast. A curly haired, doe-eyed, 7-week-old, cute as a button, baby girl.  Gabrielle came for a visit with her mom and dad.  She was a peaceful little one, who liked to cuddle and stare out at everyone. We took turns holding her and passing her around. When she was hungry, her dad mixed up some formula with water, got the bottle ready and passed her to eager arms.  She’s taking about 4 ounces every 2 ½ to 3 hours, getting plenty of wet diapers and a few poops every day.  I know, because I got to change a few!

Her mom wasn’t able to breastfeed, and I didn’t ask why or what happened. She didn’t volunteer the information and didn’t ask me for advice, so I was just honorary auntie for the day and held the little angel.  Her mom had to return to work soon after her birth.  They’re happy with the day care facility and have mastered packing the diaper bags already. What I noticed about these parents was how calm they were, how much they both love and care for their baby, and how easy it seemed.  It was a pleasure to see so much love surrounding a little one. I guess I forget, because often I see families who need assistance.  It’s great to be reminded that not every situation is a crisis.
