Your Voice (part 2)
by Kate Kahn - 31st October 2008
Once again it's time to publish the results of how you feel on certain issues we've raised in our polls. Remember, your answers help us to take the pulse of what's important to you, what works and doesn't work for you. Periodically I publish the results of those polls so that you can see how the issues are resonating with others and whether you fall into the majority or minority. So, once again, here we go!
We asked what would constitute a "reasonable" amount of time for a workplace to let you pump. Overwhelmingly (64%), you said 20 minutes. 20% of you wanted 30 minutes. (I remember pumping at work. 20 minutes seemed like a good amount of time).
In terms of whether you supplemented your breastfeeding with formula, 46% of you did and nearly 54% of you did not. I was actually surprised by this number. Supplementing with formula is fine to do. If you think you want to mix formula with your breast milk send a question to Nurse Barb on our website. She'll tell you how to do it.
78% of you did not feel that returning to work caused you to stop breastfeeding but on the other hand, 100% of you said that having a longer maternity leave would help you to breastfeed for longer than you did. We're all in agreement. If we pulled our political power together, maybe we could push our Congressmen and women to change the law to extend maternity leave. Many countries already have maternity leaves MUCH longer than ours.
If your spouse or significant other helped in the feeding of your baby, you're in the majority ( 65%). 35% of you had no help for one reason or another. (I have no way of knowing if any single parents answered the poll).
Please keep the responses coming. They're not only interesting but also provide valuable insight for hundreds of other new moms!
