Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Breast Milk in Ice Cream!

Ok....I've heard it all now!  Listen to this:  The animal rights group, Peta, is calling on ice cream makers, Ben & Jerry to use breast milk in their ice cream instead of cow's milk!  Yes, I know.  You can hardly believe your eyes!  Can you stand it!

Peta says using breast milk "would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms."  Ok, now I love animals.  And I don't wear anything with fur.  But COME ON!  Is milking cows inhumane?

So I'm thinking 'you've got to be kidding me,' when I read on and find out that a Swiss restaurant owner is already making soups, stews and sauces that are comprised of 75% breast milk.  Further reading reveals that scientists are looking at the nutrients in breast milk as a viable, even preferable, ingredient in food because of the prebiotic sugars that trigger the growth of probiotics, which can have health benefits.

Well, I don't know about you but I, for one, do not want my ice cream made from breast milk.  Luckily Ben & Jerry see it my way.  Responding to Peta's request, the company told FoodNavigator-USA.com, "We applaud Peta's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

Phew!
