Helping parents nurture healthy babies

No Need for Alarm

In recent weeks we've seen news story after news story about Chinese milk products contaminated with melamine---a chemical used in plastics.  Tens of thousands of babies in China who were fed Chinese-made infant formula have fallen sick and at least four have died.  Of course that's horrific.  It's incredible that any company would think it ok to bolster food with something so harmful.

That said, here in the U.S. we have protections in place to prevent such a situation from impacting us.  In the U.S. it's illegal to sell infant formula that was made in China.  It was illegal long before this scandal broke.  Not only that, but, in the wake of this tragedy, the FDA has examined where U.S. formula manufacturers get their ingredients and found that nothing comes from China.

Five companies are allowed to sell infant formual in the U.S. and they are all in the U.S.  The FDA mandates standards for the content of the formula and regulates the process by which they are made.  Companies are held to strict record-keeping.  On top of that, the FDA also does yearly plant inspections and product analyses.

So rest assured, if you feed your child infant formula, there's no cause for alarm.
