Introducing Solids

by Barbara Dehn - 24th October 2008

I’m often asked when is the best time to introduce solids.  Many parents are eager to give their baby the best start and are ready for the rice cereal way before the baby is.  The best time to introduce rice cereal is when your pediatrician or pediatric nurse practitioner recommends it, based on your child’s unique growth and development. Babies need to be able to sit up and weigh at least 15 pounds.  Most pediatricians like to see the baby double their weight before recommending solids.  Most recommend waiting until the baby is at least 6 months old, as that’s when they’re better able to chew and swallow.

Why rice cereal?  Well, for one it’s less allergenic and is gluten-free. Mix the cereal with formula or pumped breastmilk and make sure it’s very liquidy. Try a small amount on a rubber or plastic spoon to protect the baby’s gums.

Try one feeding each day, when the baby’s happy and content.  It’s not a good idea to try this when they’re really hungry or upset. Every baby is different, some will be content with 1-3 spoonfuls, and others will want a whole bowl.
