Helping parents nurture healthy babies

Twins----Managing the time!

I saw a new mom with her two beautiful babies recently for her postpartum check up.  She was radiant and happy despite sleep deprivation.  We talked about my most recent segment on ABC where I talked about Sex versus Sleep.   You might be wondering how this relates to feeding a baby. Well, it actually does relate, because this mom said that sleep was the most important thing in her life right now.  Her lack of sleep from caring for her twins led to much less milk than the babies needed.  She was pumping every two hours and was able to keep up for the first month.  After that, it just became impossible to keep up, so she made the switch to formula.  She said that she needed to feel good about her decision, so she weighed her options and promised herself that once she made the decision there would be no looking back.  She estimates that even now, the amount of time she spends feeding her two babies leaves very little for anything else.  We tried to estimate how much time she sleeps and how much time there's left to eat, use the bathroom and do laundry.  The answer, not much.  She even laughed and wondered what moms with only one baby do with their time. Welcome to the real world and figuring it all out. I've known lots of moms with twins and they have my admiration and respect as I marvel at how they manage.
