The Broom Closet
by Barbara Dehn - 27th June 2008
I heard from a friend that she used to pump in the broom closet at work. She was working in a major corporation as a middle manager and there was no place else for her to pump. Oh, there was an outlet in the ladies room, but no private place to pump. She could stand at the sink and say hi to everyone who came in to use the bathroom while balancing the pump on a counter and standing up. You see, she worked in a cubicle, and didn’t have an office to pump in. What amazed me, was her empathy for women who worked in other settings where there weren’t separate ladies rooms, and the employees were standing on their feet all day. She felt sorry for other moms who had it worse than she did. Aren’t moms amazing?
When we look at breastfeeding rates, they decline significantly when women have to return to work. For many women pumping is not the problem, it’s lugging the pump and the cooler with them. For many women the way they feed their baby isn’t a choice, it’s completely dependent on their circumstances.
