Feeding Our Babies While Out and About
This issue absolutely stops me in my tracks. I’m astounded that we have to create legislation that allows women the right to feed their children in public places, like restaurants and stores. Everywhere I look, it seems that people are clutching a water bottle, or coffee cup, sipping while doing just about everything. No one seems to care about that, but they do care about two things. First, some people can’t get over the idea that babies are able to derive nourishment from their mommy’s breasts. I know, I know, it’s because breasts are not for feeding, obviously, breasts are objects to be admired or used in advertising and media for attention. Second, other people object to the idea that women might not want to breastfeed in public, instead use a bottle, and feel the need to scold moms for not breastfeeding.
What’s a mom to do? I know plenty of moms who have been criticized for both choices. And the point here, is that it is always a choice, and moms do need the right to be able to make that decision about what’s best in that moment when their baby is crying in a store or restaurant and not feel that they’ll be asked to leave, or scolded or have anyone question their decision.
