The Breastfeeding Debate...really!
by Kate Kahn - 08th October 2007
We've seen the presidential candidates debate the merits of the war in Iraq, abortion, the economy, immigration, education and many other topics. I'd like to know this: Why haven't we heard from them on whether the right to breastfeed in public should be mandated by a federal law? Really. I'm not kidding (well, my tongue is somewhat in my cheek). They've certainly debated more trivial topics (not that I'm saying this issue is trivial). They've all said we need to cap wasteful spending. Wow, that's a good one! I mean, really, what's the debate there?
Seriously, was Chelsea Clinton breastfed? Inquiring minds want to know. Well I want to know. If she was, did Hillary ever do it in public? If so, was she ever humiliated when doing so? If she bottle fed, was she made to feel guilty? Wouldn't you just love to see Slick Mitt squirm a little when asked about whether a mother should breastfeed or bottlefeed her child? Or if he would sign a law about public breastfeeding? And what about mandating businesses to provide a clean, comfortable room for lactating moms to pump in at work. Goodness, there are those who propose tax breaks for businesses that are lactation-friendly. Mitt might actually break a sweat considering that one! And Giuliani. Who knows where he'd fall on these questions. He and Mitt might start arguing and forget that they're on the same side.
Come on all you moderators. At the very least, these topics would make the debates a little more interesting and lively to watch! (You've got my good friend, Ginny, to thank for this one!)
